How our volumetric concrete mixers work

They come with in-built mixers. Our trucks travel to construction sites all over Welwyn Garden City, Hertfordshire, and North London. When on-site, they can mix 1 to 10 cubic metres of concrete on each site visit.

What is ready mix concrete?

Ready mix concrete is a type of volumetric concrete. Our volumetric concrete trucks deliver gravel, cement, water, and sand to construction sites across London.

Lots of contractors prefer ready mix concrete because they can customise it. They can tell our team exactly which concrete grades and strengths they need. We create and pack their materials at our batching plant.

This type of concrete is sometimes called ready made concrete. With our quality procedures, sourcing premium quality materials is a hassle-free experience.

Concrete is one of the most common construction materials in the world. It goes into pavements, bridges, industrial buildings, and residential slabs.

How much does ready mix concrete cost?

The cost of ready mix concrete depends on which supplier you choose.

We are one of the only ready mix concrete suppliers that do not charge over the odds. We want to reduce waste and save you money.

Our prices start from £80 per cubic metre. For each cubic metre of ready mix concrete, you will get premium quality cement, sand, gravel, and stone. We source high-quality materials in bulk, which means that you can get the best products at a reasonable price.

How do you measure the strength of concrete?

If you choose the wrong concrete strength, your construction site will be unsafe.

Measuring the strength of concrete is a standard practice in the construction industry. At HH Muckers, we keep up with all the latest rules and regulations for concrete.

Lots of ready mix concrete suppliers conduct compression tests. This involves taking a sample from an existing batch and placing it in specialist compression equipment. The equipment measures the strength of concrete in pounds per square inch (psi).

Our clients work on construction sites all over London. They need different strengths for each project.

In general terms, contractors need concrete strengths between 15MPa (2200 psi) and 30 MPa (4400 psi).

Are there quality standards for concrete?

There are quality standards for everything in the construction industry. In a line of work that builds communal structures, it is important to stay up to date on the latest rules and regulations.

At HH Muckers, our quality standards start when we source materials. We only buy the best for our contractors because we know that they depend on us for quality.

Our team conducts density, moisture, and void tests on batches of ready mix concrete. We want to ensure that each delivery contains the best products.

How long do I have to place and finish the concrete?

Concrete is one of the most common materials in the world. This means that every construction site is different.

Contractors should always be conscious of time. Over 95% of first-time ready mix concrete customers order another delivery from us. Our guaranteed time slots mean that contractors can plan their day and meet time slots.

If you work within an appropriate time frame, you will not have any problems placing and finishing ready mix concrete.

Concrete can become difficult to work with in some circumstances.

  • If it is left for too long it will become less pliable
  • Harsh weather conditions can negatively impact ready mix concrete

What is the difference between concrete and cement?

Cement and concrete are important for construction projects all over North London.

Sand, water, gravel, and cement combine to create ready mix concrete. Cement is a grey powder before it mixes with water. Without cement, concrete would not be able to harden.

Ready mix concrete goes into a wide range of construction projects. Contractors use it for residential slabs, industrial structures, and large bridges.

How do you measure concrete?

We measure ready mix concrete by cubic metre. One cubic metre weighs approximately 2.4T/m3.

Does concrete gain strength by drying out?

Ready mix concrete dries when bonds form.

Hydration is an important part of creating usable ready mix concrete. When water reacts with gravel, sand, and cement, hydration begins.

Water molecules combine with molecules from the other materials inside concrete. Strong bonds form and crystalise. As this happens, less moisture is in the mixture because it is locked into bonds. This causes concrete to dry.

Hydration can happen anytime. It can occur months and years after you have laid the concrete. As long as moisture is present, hydration can occur. Water is highly reactive when it combines with gravel, sand, and cement.

How long does it take for concrete to cure?

Drying and curing are two separate processes.

They are often mistaken for each other. However, hydration does not need monitoring. Water molecules react with the other materials inside ready mix concrete and hydration begins.

In contrast, curing requires intervention. Contractors must shield their batch from intense weather conditions like wind, heat, and snow. Adverse weather conditions can halt the hardening process and create defects.

Contractors need to:

  • Sustain an environment of over 50 degrees for 3 to 14 days
  • Sustain relative humidity above 80%

Most batches of concrete will be cured after 28 days.

What strength concrete is normally used for a slab under a house?

Our Welwyn Garden City contractors tend to use C35 and above mixes for residential slabs.

We supply ready mix concrete to contractors all over North London. Our team knows that every project is different, which is why we can only talk about general situations.

Over 95% of first-time customers choose our services again. Our volumetric concrete trucks contain separate compartments. We can batch each delivery to our customers’ grade, strength, and ratio specifications.

Why is my concrete cracking already?

Cracks are a normal part of working with concrete.

Contractors who work on large construction projects tend to see more cracks. Concrete shrinks an average of an ⅛ of an inch for every 20 feet.

A chemical process called hydration occurs when water molecules bond with gravel, sand, and cement molecules. When water molecules lock into bonds, there is less moisture in the mixture. This is how concrete dries and hardens.

Hydration can happen for months and years after the initial reaction. If excess water is present in concrete, it will expand, contract, and form cracks.

Mistakes can cause excess cracks. There are a few ways that contractors can reduce the number of cracks in their concrete.

  • Only add as much water as necessary to each batch of ready mix concrete. Adding more water makes the batch easier to work with but encourages excess hydration.
  • Only work on the surface of concrete when it is cured. Working on it beforehand will create defects.

We recommend adding one expansion joint for every three metres of concrete. Adding expansion joints gives your project structure and reduces the amount of space available for contraction.

What is screed?

Screed is made from water, cement, and sand. Contractors spread screed into thin layers to create smooth, blemish-free surfaces.

HH Muckers’ concrete screed contains a range of sand sizes. Our traditional screed contains small pieces of sand, making it very practical. We also sell batches of screed that contain 10mm sand pieces. We recommend smaller pieces of sand for residential projects and bigger pieces of sand for commercial projects.

Our screed goes into all sorts of construction projects. So, what is screed used for?

What is screed used for?

Floor screeding creates thin layers. More often than not, screed is poured over concrete subfloors. Concrete is a popular subfloor material because it can support heavy loads. Contractors lay screed on top of concrete floors to even out the imperfections.

Screed makes an excellent base for floors. It is common for contractors to create a layer of screed before they install carpet, tiles, and lino.

A lot of our residential customers pour screed over underfloor heating pipes. This practice insulates the pipes, which can reduce overall heating bills.

Differences between concrete and screed?

Screed is a thin material, and concrete is a thick material. Screed is workable, but concrete is more difficult to spread. There is only one ingredient that separates these products. As well as sand, cement, and water, concrete also contains gravel.

Screed floors do not have the same benefits as concrete floors. They usually sit on top of concrete subfloors. Concrete is known for its load-bearing qualities. It makes excellent sub bases, but it does not create smooth surfaces. Once your concrete sub base is in place, you can pour screed on top. This will create a thin, even surface.

Types of floor screed

We sell two main types of screed.

Floor screedYou will find this type of screed on construction sites all over Welwyn Garden City. It is ideal for people who want to create thin layers and smooth surfaces. Lots of contractors pour a layer of this screed before laying carpets and tiles.

Reinforced screed – This type of screed is less common. It contains cement, water, sand, and metal mesh fibres. It is a good option for people who need to support heavy structures.

How to screed a floor?

Floor screeding is a common practice. All you need is your screed and a screed float. You can buy a screed float from any major shop that sells construction tools.

  1. Pour your screed into place
  2. Use the flat end of a screed float to smooth out the lumps and bumps

If your screed float leaves marks, you need to buy a carborundum stone. Most manufacturers attach a handle to the stone. Grab the handle and use the stone to smooth out the surface.

How do I cure screed?

Screed floors need time to cure.

By seven days, screed has reached 65% of its final strength. It can take much longer to reach 100%, depending on the environment. The heat, humidity, and type of screed can all impact the cure time.

Some of our customers place a polythene sheet over their screed to speed up the curing process.

How long does screed take to dry?

In general, screed dries at a rate of 1mm each day. If your layer of concrete screed is over 50mm, it will need more time to dry. You should add half a day for each mm over 50mm.

Can I cancel my order?

We accept cancellations if they are made up to 24 hours before existing delivery slots.
