What is ready mix concrete?

It is a combination of stone, cement, sand, and water. People in the industry sometimes refer to it as ready made concrete. This is because suppliers source and mix all the necessary materials and mix them on-site.

We create lots of concrete grades and strengths. Our customers can fulfil lots of different project requirements with our delivery service.

All the materials are transported via one of our volumetric concrete trucks. They contain in-built mixers that combine the materials while on-site.

How do you measure the strength of concrete?

Ready mix concrete is vital for construction projects all over London. Our contractors depend on us for strong, reliable concrete.

It is important to measure the strength of concrete. Doing so can create a safe working environment and improve the outcome of construction projects.

To measure concrete, scientists remove pieces of existing concrete. They put pieces into specialist compression equipment, which measures the strength in pounds per square inch (psi).

Contractors need different strengths for each project. In general terms, they need ready mix concrete strengths between 15MPa (2200 psi) and 30 MPa (4400 psi).

Are there quality standards for concrete?

Ready mix concrete goes into industrial buildings, commercial sites, and residential slabs. It is important for a number of other construction projects.

Concrete is one of the most common construction materials in the world. It is subject to lots of rules and regulations. These rules ensure that your construction site stays safe.

We make safety standards a priority. We conduct void, density, and moisture tests at our batching plant. These tests guarantee you receive high-quality materials.

To hear more about our quality standards, call 01992 635454.

How long do I have to place and finish the concrete?

It is important to place and finish ready mix concrete with a reasonable time frame.

Ready mix concrete can become hard to work with for a few reasons. Harsh heat, cold winds, and any number of other weather conditions can impact concrete.

Contractors must keep an eye on the time. Every project needs different time controls. With our ready mix concrete delivery slots, it has never been easier to work within a reasonable time frame.

What is the difference between concrete and cement?

Both cement and concrete are common construction materials.

Cement goes into concrete. It combines with sand, gravel, stone, and water to create ready mix concrete. Cement functions as the hardening agent in the mixture.

There are two popular types of cement. We create Portland and Asphalt cement at our batching plant.

We deliver ready mix concrete to contractors all around Hertford, Essex, and North London.

How do you measure concrete?

We measure ready mix concrete by cubic metre. One cubic metre weighs approximately 2.4T/m3.

Does concrete gain strength by drying out?

Ready mix concrete would be incomplete without hydration. Hydration is a chemical process that occurs when water mixes with stone, cement, and sand.

When water molecules hit the sand, cement, and stone molecules, strong bonds form. They crystalise and the materials begin to look like ready mix concrete.

Hydration makes moisture disappear from the mixture. When moisture disappears and locks into bonds, concrete becomes stronger.

Hydration happens as soon as water interacts with the other materials. It primarily occurs in the first month after concrete is laid. If moisture is present in concrete hydration can happen years and months after it is laid.

How long does it take for concrete to cure?

Ready mix concrete takes a while to cure. Most concrete will cure after 28 days. This number depends on several factors.

Contractors must put in place the following external controls.

  • Concrete can only cure in an environment of over 50 degrees. Contractors must maintain this temperature for 3 to 14 days.
  • Concrete thrives in an environment where the relative humidity is above 80%.

We deliver ready mix concrete to contractors all over Hertford, North London, and Essex. They work on different projects which take different amounts of time to cure.

Always speak to your engineers and contractors for more specific information about the curing process.

What strength concrete is normally used for a slab under a house?

Our customers are based all over Hertford, North London, and Essex. They work on different projects that need different strength concrete. They order C35 and above concrete mixes for residential slabs.

Our volumetric concrete trucks contain different compartments for each material. When you choose HH Muckers, you can have lots of different grades and strengths at once.

We always recommend speaking to your engineers for specific concrete strength information.

Why is my concrete cracking already?

All types of concrete crack. Cracks are a natural part of working with concrete. Concrete shrinks and contracts throughout its lifetime.

Hydration causes contraction. Hydration occurs when water molecules react with the other materials inside ready mix concrete. The molecules bond and crystalise.

When these bonds occur, there is less moisture in the mixture. Even after contractors have laid concrete, water seeps into the mixture. This causes excess hydration, shrinkage, and contraction.

Throughout its lifecycle, concrete shrinks an average of an ⅛ of an inch for every 20 feet.

To reduce cracks you must:

  • Only add the amount of water you need. If you add more, excess hydration will occur.
  • Add one expansion joint to every three metres of concrete.
  • Avoid working on the surface of concrete before it is cured.

Can you advise me on what type of concrete to order?

Concrete is one of the most common construction materials in the world. It goes into all sorts of construction projects like industrial buildings and commercial properties.

We can only talk about general situations. We always recommend speaking to engineers for more specific grade and strength information.

What is screed?

Screed floors are thin, even layers. Screed is a popular building material that contains sand, cement, and water. Typically, the pieces of sand are very thin. At HH Muckers, we sell a range of screed products. Some contain pieces of sand that are as big as 10mm.

Fine, sharp pieces of sand make our concrete screed pliable. It is easy to spread the product across whatever surface. This construction material guarantees clean, even surfaces.

What is screed used for?

Floor screed acts as an additional layer. Our customers pour this product over concrete sub bases. Concrete bases have excellent load-bearing qualities, but they can be bumpy. To smooth out the surface, contractors lay a screed base on top.

Lots of contractors lay floor screeding underneath carpets, tiles, and slats. The underfloor screed layer ensures that the floor is even and blemish-free.

You can also use screed in conjunction with underfloor heating pipes. Just pour your screed over the pipes and let it set. This acts as a two-in-one insulator and base.

Differences between concrete and screed

Concrete and screed might seem similar, but they are very different.

Our concrete is made from 20mm gravel, water, sand, and cement. You will find concrete structures in most (if not all) construction projects. This material goes into pillars, bases, and other load-bearing structures.

Our concrete screed is made from water, sand, and cement. Screed does not contain gravel. The pieces of sand range from very fine to 10mm. The finer the pieces of sand, the more workable the mixture is. This material creates thin, even layers.

Types of floor screed

Before you order, make sure you are getting the right type of floor screeding

Traditional screed – We recommend this screed for contractors who need even, blemish-free surfaces.

Reinforced screed – If you want to create floor layers that hold heavier structures, this is the way to go. Each batch contains all the usual screed ingredients as well as metal mesh fibres. This product cracks and shrinks less than traditional screed.

Floor screed – This is the most popular type of screed that we sell. It is ideal for thin layers and smooth, even surfaces.

How to screed a floor?

The most effective tool you can use is a screed float. Screed floats are comprised of a rubber handle and a flat metal surface. You might know these tools as trowels.

When your screed floor is in place, grab your screed float. Use the metal surface to smooth out any imperfections. You might still have a few trowel marks and stubborn blemishes. In this case, you need to use a carborundum stone. If you buy it from any major retailer, the handle will already be attached.

How do I cure screed?

Concrete screed takes a while to cure. After a week, it should be 65% cured. To make the process quicker, you can use a polythene sheet. If the sheet is airtight, it will help the screed layer cure. When it is completely cured, you can start laying carpet, tiles, and lino.

It is important to remember that lots of factors can impact curing. The type of screed that you use, the temperature in the room, and the overall environment are just a few factors.

Call 01992 635454 to organise a screed delivery.

How long does screed take to dry?

Screed dries at different rates depending on the thickness of the layer.

1-50mm thick layers – These layers dry at a rate of 1mm per day.

50mm+ thick layers – You need to add extra time for layers that are over 50mm. Any extra mms could take another day to dry per 1mm. Layers that are 75mm thick could take anywhere from 75 to 100 days to dry.

Can I cancel my ready mix concrete delivery?
