What is ready mix concrete?

It is a combination of aggregates like sand, water, cement, and gravel. These materials travel to your construction site in a volumetric concrete truck. They are then mixed on-site.

It is sometimes called ready made concrete.

When you order from us, you can choose the exact ratios you need. Our team load the lorry up with your order at the batching plant.

How do you measure the strength of concrete?

Concrete strength depends on a range of factors. The water-to-cement ratio and the quality of the raw materials are both important.

Compressive strength tests are the best way to measure the strength of concrete.

You must ensure your concrete is strong enough for the job at hand. It is important to remember that different construction jobs need different strengths.

Samples of ready mix concrete go into professional compression equipment. This equipment measures the strength of concrete.

Most construction projects require concrete strengths between 15 MPa (2200 psi) and 30 MPa (4400 psi).

Always speak to your contractors and engineers about specific grade strengths.

Are there quality standards for concrete?

We stay up-to-date on the latest quality standards in the industry.

We provide a comprehensive service. This means that our quality and safety standards start at the batching plant. Our team perform moisture, void, and density tests on raw materials.

We assess the strength of concrete through compressive strength tests.

Contact our local ready mix concrete Waltham Abbey specialists on 01992 635454 to discuss quality measures.

How long do I have to place and finish the concrete?

It is important to outline a timeframe for placing and finishing concrete.

Concrete can become difficult to manage in adverse circumstances. Extreme heat and wind can hamper your progress.

Time is an important factor. We recommend being ready to work with your ready mix concrete delivery as soon as it arrives.

What is the difference between concrete and cement?

Both are commonly used construction materials.

Cement combines with sand, gravel, and water to create ready mix concrete. It is an important part of the hardening process. It is a grey powder when dry and a thick mortar paste when combined with water.

Concrete is the most commonly used man-made material in the world. It goes into structures like bridges and buildings.

How do you measure concrete?

We measure ready mix concrete by cubic metre. One cubic metre weighs approximately 2.4T/m3.

Does concrete gain strength by drying out?

Hydration causes ready mix concrete to dry. It is a chemical process that begins when water combines with the other materials inside concrete.

Without water, concrete would not dry. Water molecules bond with sand, gravel, and cement molecules to form crystals.

When crystals form, the amount of water in the ready mix concrete decreases.

Hydration occurs whenever water is present in the mixture. This process happens in the first month after you lay the concrete. It can occur years after.

How long does it take for concrete to cure?

It is important not to confuse drying with curing.

Curing ready mix concrete is a complex process. Your engineers and contractors are best equipped to give specific advice about your project.

In any case, you must maintain a temperature of more than 50 degrees for 3 to 14 days. You must also maintain relative humidity above 80%.

It is important to protect your batch from intense weather conditions.

Contractors in Waltham Abbey call our team for general curing advice. Contact us on 01992 635454 for more information.

What strength concrete is normally used for a slab under a house?

Each project is different. Our ready mix concrete Waltham Abbey customers work on all sorts of projects.

In general, they order C35 and above grade strengths for residential slabs. For information that is specific to your project, consult your engineers.

Our contractors love the fact that they can order many different grades from us. They can fulfil a few project requirements in the same time slot.

Why is my concrete cracking already?

All types of concrete are subject to cracks.

Cracks occur when ready mix concrete dries. Hydration causes concrete to expand and contract. Over the course of its lifecycle, concrete will shrink an average of an ⅛ of an inch for every 20 feet.

Even though cracks are nothing to worry about, a few poor practices can cause more cracks than necessary.

Here are a few things to keep in mind:

  • Whenever water is present in ready mix concrete, hydration occurs. Some contractors add too much water to their mixture to make it easier to work with. Only add as much as necessary to avoid excess hydration.
  • Adding expansion joints to your batch can give it structure and reduce its ability to shrink and contract. Add an expansion joint every 3 to 3.5 metres.

What is screed?

Floor screeding is a building material. Our screed is thin and workable. It is perfect for a range of commercial and residential construction projects.

We put cement, water, and sand into our screed. If you want to make your screed even more workable, you can ask for smaller pieces. We can customise your batch with sand that ranges from dust to 10mm.

What is screed used for?

Contractors create screed floors for lots of reasons.

  • Screed makes thin toppers for concrete sub bases. Concrete sub bases have excellent load-bearing qualities, so they are very common. But contractors struggle to make concrete bases that have smooth surfaces. To solve this problem, they pour a thin layer of screed on top.
  • Screed is also a good base for flooring. Our customers pour a layer of screed and let it set before installing carpet, tiles, and linoleum.
  • Screed can even support home heating systems! Some people pour screed over their underfloor heating pipes. This insulates the pipes and reduces home and commercial heating bills.

Differences between concrete and screed

These materials share the same ingredients: water, cement, and sand. We also add 20mm pieces of gravel to our concrete.

Overall, floor screed is much thinner than concrete. It is easy to spread screed into a thin, level surface. Concrete is much more difficult. It is thicker and contains bumpier bits.

The main purpose of screed is to create level surfaces. On the other hand, concrete acts as a base for load-bearing structures. Screed cannot hold the same weight as concrete.

Types of floor screed

At HH Muckers, we focus on traditional floor screed and reinforced screed.

If you have worked with screed before, the chances are that you used traditional screed. It is the most common type, and it contains sand, water, and cement. You can use this type of screed to create blemish-free floors. This material is very pliable, meaning it is easy to smooth out.

Reinforced screed is the second option that we offer to contractors in Waltham Abbey. It contains all the same ingredients as traditional screed, as well as metal mesh fibres. The fibres make the mixture far more structured. You do not have to worry about your floor screeding cracking or shrinking when it dries.

We do not sell liquid screed.

How to screed a floor?

Compared to other construction structures, screed floors are simple. You need a screed float and a carborundum stone. You can buy both of these essentials at any big construction supply shop.

Spread your screed, then use the screed float to level out the surface. HH Muckers’ screed is very pliable, so you can spread it with ease. Just glide the surface over any bumps or imperfections.

The carborundum stone is important for the last step. Once you have used your screed float, you might notice a few marks. Carborundum is one of the only things that can remove float marks.

After that, you need to let your screed cure.

How do I cure screed?

Concrete screed can take a while to cure, but you need to be patient. If your screed does not cure in full, it will not reach its maximum strength.

By day seven, your layer of screed should have reached 65% of its overall strength. You can speed up the rest of the curing process by securing an airtight bag over the top of your screed.

Factors like temperature and heat can increase the time it takes for your screed to cure. If the temperature in your room is below 10°C, the curing process will slow down.

How long does screed take to dry?

If you use HH Muckers’ floor screed to create a 50mm layer of screed, it will take 50 days to dry. That is a rate of 1mm per day.

Layers that are thicker than 50mm will take longer. It could take anywhere from one to two days to dry every 1mm over 50mm. So, a screed floor that is 80mm thick could take 80 or 120 days to dry.

Can I cancel my ready mix concrete order?

Yes, you can cancel your ready mix concrete delivery up to 24 hours before your existing time slot.
