How do you measure the strength of concrete?

There are a few days to measure the strength of concrete.

It is important to gauge how strong your batch of ready mix concrete is. Different projects need different strengths.

Specialist compression equipment measures the strength of concrete. Scientists take samples from batches of concrete and place them in the machine.

The results are measured in pounds per square inch (psi). Typical construction jobs require concrete strengths between 15 MPa (2200 psi) and 30 MPa (4400 psi).

If you are ever in doubt, ask your contractors and engineers for more specific information.

Concrete strength depends on a lot of factors including the quality of the materials.

Are there quality standards for concrete?

The construction industry has strict quality standards.

We understand the importance of safety both on-site and off-site. Our team work with specialist equipment and large volumetric concrete trucks.

Our standards start at the batching plant. We conduct density, moisture, and void tests on our materials. We also measure the strength of our concrete through compressive strength tests.

Our local ready mix concrete Epping specialists can talk you through our quality controls. Contact us on 01992 635454.

How long do I have to place and finish the concrete?

You can arrange a slot for a time that suits you. This allows you to avoid days with adverse weather conditions like intense heat and icy wind.

What is the difference between concrete and cement?

They are both popular construction materials. Cement and concrete are used for bridges, residential structures, and pavements.

Cement mixes with other aggregates like sand and gravel to create ready mix concrete.

How do you measure concrete?

We measure ready mix concrete by cubic metre. One cubic metre weighs approximately 2.4T/m3.

Does ready mix concrete gain strength by drying out?

Hydration is a chemical process. It occurs when water reacts with the other components of ready mix concrete.

Water molecules react with the molecules in sand, gravel, and cement. Together, they form strong bonds. The bonds crystalise and aggregate.

When these bonds take place, there is less water in the concrete and it starts drying.

Most bonds form in the first month the concrete is laid. Hydration can still happen months or even years after if moisture is present.

How long does it take for concrete to cure?

Curing concrete depends on humidity and temperature amongst other factors. Every construction project requires different advice.

You must keep relative humidity above 80% and create an environment that is more than 50 degrees for 3 to 14 days.

Contractors all over Epping ask our team for curing advice. Call our specialists on 01992 635454 for more information.

What strength concrete is normally used for a slab under a house?

Our Essex based contractors order ready mix concrete for residential, commercial, and industrial projects.

They order C35 and above strength concrete for residential slabs.

We offer a wide range of different grades. When you choose HH Muckers, you can order a few grades for the same delivery slot. This means that you can fulfil different project requirements on the same visit.

If you want more specific information, contact your contractors and engineers.

Why is my concrete cracking already?

Whether you are working on a residential, commercial, or industrial project, cracks will appear. They are a natural part of the drying process.

Hydration is a chemical process that forms bonds between water and sand, gravel, and cement molecules.

When ready mix concrete begins to dry, it expands and contracts. It also shrinks an average of an ⅛ of an inch for every 20 feet.

Although cracks are natural, poor construction practices can cause excess cracks. There are a few things you can do to avoid creating more cracks than necessary.

  • Do not add more water than you need to. Adding too much will make your ready mix concrete easier to work with, but will also cause defects.
  • Use expansion joints. Add one joint for every 3 to 3.5 metres.
  • Only work on the surface of concrete when it has cured.

What is screed?

Our screed is thin and workable. It contains three simple ingredients: sand, water, and cement.

The sand in our concrete screed can be switched out for different sizes. We stock tiny pieces and 6mm chunks.

You can spread our screed with a simple trowel.

Applications for screed

Our customers buy screed to create screed floors. These floors have a few different purposes.

  1. They are level, which makes them perfect bases for tiles, carpets, and linoleum.
  2. They go on top of uneven subfloors to create even bases.
  3. They insulate underfloor heating pipes.

Is there a difference between concrete and screed?

HH Muckers floor screeding contains the same materials as concrete. Our concrete also comes with 20mm pieces of gravel, which bulk out the product. Concrete is far bulkier than screed, which is typically thin. It is more difficult to work with concrete than screed.

Screed is for thin floors. Concrete is for floors, sub bases, walls, and beams.

Contractors buy our screed when they need to create even, blemish-free layers. Customers buy our concrete when they need to create load-bearing structures.

We cater to people who need concrete screed in Epping. It does not matter whether you are working on a commercial or residential project. As long as you have a suitable entrance, we can deliver.

Before you book a delivery, work out how many cubic metres you need. We only sell screed in cubic metres.

Screed could be just what you need to create affordable level surfaces. You can use it as a base for tiles or a topper for concrete subfloor.

Call us on 01992 635454 to book your screed delivery.

Types of floor screed

Before you place your order, you need to know which type of screed you need.

We sell the two most popular types of screed.

  • Traditional floor screedThis is the simplest, most popular type of screed that we sell. We mix cement, water, and sand to create traditional screed. It is very easy to work with.
  • Reinforced screed –  To create reinforced screed, we add metal mesh fibres to traditional screed. The fibres create a more structured mixture which cracks and shrinks far less.

How to screed a floor?

Floor screeding is more simple than you might think. All you need is a screed float and a carborundum stone.

The screed float smooths out the surface of the screed, and the carborundum stone buffs out any marks the float leaves behind.

Do I have to cure screed?

If you do not give your screed time to cure, it will not be as efficient as possible. The more your screed cures, the stronger it is.

After a week, screed floors are over 50% of their strength. It should be at 65% by the end of day seven.

To hurry your screed along, you should make sure that your room is at the right temperature. If the room is less than 10°, your screed will not reach its full potential. The same can happen if your room is too humid.

How long does screed take to dry?

On average, our screed dries at a rate of 1mm per day.

Any screed floors that are over 50mm thick will take a bit longer to dry. You need to add an extra day of drying time for each 1mm over 50mm. Floors that are 60mm thick will take anywhere from 60 to 70 days to dry.
