How do you measure the strength of concrete?

Construction site managers need to measure the strength of concrete. Doing so ensures a safe construction site. If they use the wrong strength concrete, their slabs will not be fit for purpose.

Most suppliers use compressive strength equipment to measure the strength of their concrete.

Suppliers take cylindrical pieces of concrete from existing batches. They place the pieces into compression equipment. It compresses the samples and measures them in pounds per square inch (psi).

Are there quality standards for concrete?

At HH Muckers, we understand the importance of quality standards.

Volumetric ready mix concrete goes into construction sites all over Hertfordshire. If contractors choose the wrong supplier, their construction site can become dangerous.

We use premium quality materials. Lean, screed, concrete, sand, stone, and cement are subject to our quality tests. We conduct void, moisture, and density tests at our batching plant. This ensures that you receive the best quality materials.

How long do I have to place and finish ready mix concrete?

There is no definite answer to this question.

External factors can impact the pliability of concrete.

Harsh weather conditions like immense heat and icy winds affect concrete. We always recommend shielding batches of concrete from the elements.

Contractors need to keep an eye on the time. We recommend beginning work as soon as our volumetric concrete truck arrives on-site.

With our ready mix concrete delivery time slots, it has never been easier to meet deadlines. Our customers can book a time slot that best suits them. They can streamline labour costs with our system.

What is the difference between concrete and cement?

Cement and concrete are well-known construction materials. They both go into construction projects all over Hertfordshire, North London, and Essex.

Cement goes into concrete. It combines with stone, gravel, and water to create ready mix concrete. Cement is a vital part of the hardening process. Asphalt and Portland are two of the most popular types of concrete.

How do you measure concrete?

In the construction industry, volumetric ready mix concrete is measured in cubic metres. One cubic metre weighs approximately 2.4T/m3.

Does concrete gain strength by drying out?

Ready mix concrete gains strength through hydration.

Water is the last element that is added to sand, stone, and cement. When water combines with these other materials, hydration occurs. Water molecules combine with sand, stone, and cement molecules.

Strong bonds form and crystalise. At this point, there is less moisture in the mixture because it is locked into bonds.

This process hits its stride in the first month. It can happen months and years after the initial reaction if moisture is in ready mix concrete.

How long does it take for concrete to cure?

Ready mix concrete cures at different rates depending on the project.

Concrete goes into residential slabs, bridges, industrial buildings, and many other projects. Contractors have to give their batch enough time to cure. If they work on concrete before it cures, they will create defects.

Most concrete will cure at the end of 28 days.

Curing concrete requires external controls. We recommend taking the following steps:

  • Create an environment that is over 50 degrees for anything from 3 to 14 days. The number of days depends on your project.
  • Create an environment where the relative humidity is above 80%.

What strength concrete is normally used for a slab under a house?

When it comes to concrete strengths for houses, there are some industry-standard guidelines. It is important to choose the right strength. Using the wrong strength can create an unsafe construction site.

Our Hertfordshire based contractors order C35 and above mixes for residential slabs.

We can only advise our customers about general mixes. Structural engineers are best equipped to talk about specific concrete strengths.

Why is my concrete cracking already?

It is not uncommon to see ready mix concrete crack after a short period. Concrete shrinks an average of an ⅛ of an inch for every 20 feet. This is why it is more apparent in large-scale construction projects.

Cracks are a result of a chemical process called hydration. Hydration happens when water molecules bond with sand, gravel, and cement molecules. These bonds crystalise and cause the mixture to harden.

When hydration happens water disappears from the concrete. It shrinks, hardens, and contracts. This is when cracks occur.

Although cracks are nothing to worry about, contractors can avoid excess cracks.

  • Never add more water than necessary. Lots of water makes ready mix concrete easier to handle but encourages hydration.
  • Do not work on the surface of concrete before it is dry. Doing so can create defects.
  • Place one expansion joint in the mixture every three metres.

What is screed?

Screed is a common construction material that goes into all kinds of commercial and residential projects. It is made from sharp sand, water, and cement. Different types of screed contain different sizes of aggregates.

HH Muckers’ concrete screed is made from fine, sharp, small bits of sand. We also sell screeds that contain aggregates that range from 6 to 10mm. Fine sand is used in domestic construction projects, whereas larger screed aggregates go into commercial and industrial projects.

What is screed used for?

They pour screed over sub bases to create even, smooth structures. HH Muckers’ screed is also poured over underfloor heating systems to insulate the pipes and improve their effectiveness. Screed is a cost-effective option for people who want to upgrade their existing heating systems.

Screed floors are very versatile. A lot of our customers pour a thin layer of screed underneath their tiles, carpet, or wood slats. You can easily achieve a clean, smooth surface with screed and a trowel. Our screed is pliable and workable, which makes it the best option for busy contractors.

Differences between concrete and screed

Screed and concrete are similar construction materials. Concrete is made from sand, 20mm gravel, cement, and water. Screed is made from sharp sand, water, and cement.

A concrete floor has a different purpose than a screed floor. Builders also use concrete for floors, but they also use it for walls, beams, and other construction foundations. Concrete can bear the weight of heavy loads.

HH Mucker’s concrete screed floors are much thinner, and the material has a thinner consistency than concrete. These kinds of floors are designed to even out layers and create smooth surfaces. They usually go on top of concrete layers.

Types of floor screed

Traditional screeds –

Traditional screed is by far the most popular type. Contractors order traditional screed when they need to create smooth, even floors.

Reinforced screeds –

Reinforced screeds are much stronger than typical compounds. We add metal mesh and fibres to our reinforced products to limit curb shrinkage. This kind of screed is much less likely to crack during the drying process.

Floor screed –

Floor screed is flexible enough to move without cracking. We recommend this option to contractors who need to create a superior finish. You can easily lay this product and use a trowel to create a blemish-free finish.

How to screed a floor?

Floor screeding is a common practice. Whether you are working on a domestic or commercial build, you need to know how to screed a floor. The good news is that the process is simple. The bad news is that a lot can go wrong.

Here are a few steps to help you.

  1. Spread the screed across the floor using a screed float.
  2. Compact and level out the screed. It is important to compact your screed properly, or you will face problems down the line.
  3. Sand and cement screed is not self-leveling. If you have this type of screed, you must use a straightedge screed float or trowel to level the floor. You can also use a straight piece of timber.
  4. Leave the screed to cure. You should place a polythene sheet over the screed.
  5. Leave the screed to dry.

How to cure screed?

It is easy to cure concrete screed. Just place an airtight polythene sheet over the top of your screed floor. On average, screed takes seven days to cure to 65% of its overall strength and hardens more over time.

Lots of variables impact the time frame. The surface area of the screed, the type of screed used, and the temperature of the room can have an effect on the time frame. If the temperature of the room is lower than 10ºC, your screed will take much longer to cure.

How long does screed take to dry?

Screed floors dry at a rate of 1mm each day. To speed up this process, make sure that your screed is undisturbed. That means no traffic, footfall, or other layers of flooring for a few weeks.

Can I cancel my order?

We accept cancellations up to 24 hours before the initial ready mix concrete delivery slot.
